This recipe
for orange coriander lentil soup came just on time, during days when the
weather finally changed and the first days of autumn said hi, with leaves on
the streets and cool weather that needed a light sweater.
I spent the beginning
of the week doing necessary paperwork, and by that I might getting my ID and
passport renewed so I can officially go on being someone; the cool weather was very welcome, since hot days running those errands make you miserable, and there´s a need to dress like the grown-up person I am, loose the flip flops
and be serious while filling forms and having my picture taken.
Very hot days are over, and having lentil soup is a nice idea. This is
our recipe chosen by the French Fridays with Dorie group, from the book Around my French Table.
My usual
recipe with this nutritious legume is the lentil and chorizo stew, a hearty
dish that I make every winter. In this case I had to keep reminding myself that
it was a soup. And a soup means a good amount of broth. Because my soups
tend to be thick, I´m certainly not a broth person.
The
original recipe talks about an orange scented lentil soup. I don´t know if it´s
me, but I really had trouble finding the orange flavor that justified the
title. Pretty much like it happened with the orange pork tenderloin. So after
an hour I added more orange peel, orange juice and more coriander. Then it
changed for the better.
It starts like an italian sauce, with the vegetable trinity of celery (the best vegetable to flavor soups, even if you don´t like it, use it), carrots and onions being softened in oil and butter. Then add broth, lentils, orange peel and spices like ginger, peppercorns and coriander seeds.
Lately I discovered that orange and coriander, the seed whole or crushed in a mortar, are an amazing combination. Really great. So I added more coriander seeds, so the lentil soup would have more taste. Otherwise it was a bit bland.
It´s even better the second day as I suspected. I ended it with a dollop of whipped cream cheese and some salty bacon and it was perfect.

Definitely got better a few days later. I am a huge fan of this (didn't think I would be!)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful soup. I can't wait to try it.
ReplyDeleteThis was my lunch, snack, and dinner, on-and-off all week, Paula. It just kept getting better and better and I didn't even add any meat to it. Thanks for your soup suggestion. Betsy suggested one similiar to yours. Glad it's cooling off for you although I sense that you have enjoyed the Summer and you've actually had some fun. Also you've cooked up a storm. I suspect it has been an exciting week for Argentina.
ReplyDeleteI like how you upped the seasonings, Paula! And I'm going to have to try your chorizo lentil stew...sounds fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThis looks delicious! I agree about celery. It adds the best flavor!
ReplyDeletePaula, nice bowl of comfort-style lentil soup. Actually, people around here are of the firm belief that lentil soup always improves in flavor after a day or two. I am sure that the fact that you increased the seasonings made for a very intriguing taste.
ReplyDeleteI found it odd to be counting seeds... I doubled the coriander because it is one of my favorites. The ginger really stood out in mine.
ReplyDeleteYour lentil chorizo stew sounds delicious, but I also really enjoyed this soup. The orange flavor came through clearly in mind, but my coriander might be getting a bit old because that flavor did not come through very clearly. Might need to buy a new batch.
ReplyDeleteYes, mine was good reheated the next day as well. This was pretty yummy, but I think I might try your link for chorizo and lentil stew next time.
ReplyDeleteI agree this soup is better the next day and I forgot about my creme fraiche and didn't add any bacon either.
ReplyDeleteThis recipe looks great. I have already printed it out and will make it this weekend. Thanks for the tips, especially about the coriander seeds and orange peel. Looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteOh I just love lentils and pumpkin combination and I am sure the orange and coriander would lift this soup to a new level. I can't wait to try it out :)
ReplyDeleteYour soup looks so pretty in the third picture, Paula! Love seeing all those lentils, with flecks of orange. I really thought this was a wonderful soup and perfect for our cool end to winter. Both my husband and I enjoyed this one, and it was better the second day. Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteI have a lentil soup recipe that makes a regular visit to our dinner table. The addition of orange and coriander is an appealing flavor combination that is worthy updating my trusty old favorite recipe. A robust and exciting dinner recipe Paula!
ReplyDeleteI'm such a soup girl. I just love it no matter what's in it. But I have a special place in my heart for lentil soups. I love the orange and coriander in your soup. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love soup, and I've been eating it constantly since moving back to Colorado. I need to add this to my rotation. I love the different flavors in these bowls. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!
ReplyDeleteDelicious looking soup. You did a fantastic job. I enjoyed this soup - loved the subtle orange flavor. Hope you have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteWhat a unique soup! It looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job on your soup. This was a delicious soup.
ReplyDeleteI think I ended up with more orange peel than Dorie suggested, but I kinda did that on purpose because I just love orange so much. I thought that this was a good intro to lentils for my husband and me, and I'm really eager to try other recipes that use them, especially since I keep hearing that other soups can be better! For what it was, I enjoyed this one. But I'm definitely going to have to try it with chorizo sometime soon!
ReplyDeleteYes, this was a perfect soup for those in between seasons.
ReplyDeleteGetting passports or other ID's renewed is never fun, no matter where you live :-(
That looks perfect and I love that soup bowl. I think that the addition of Chorizo must really
ReplyDeletegive the lentils a delicious flavor. I'm going to give that a try. Thanks. Have a great weekend.
The lentil chorizo stew sounds great. I'll have to try it. The orange lentil soup wasn't my favorite. I'm glad that we have a dish appropriate for both of our seasons for a change.
ReplyDeleteThe orange and ginger were a great combination for this soup! We love soup in our house, this will be a repeat!
ReplyDeleteYour soup looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteInteresting comment on the orange not being too noticeable, though it smelled fantastic- this was what my guys said as well. I will not be shy to be a bit heavier handed next time- it was a lovely (and unexpected for us) compliment to the lentils. And your photos are fab~
